AUGUST 7-11, 2018 AT THE SCOTTSDALE PLAZA RESORT-SCOTTSDALE, AZ.

The Americana Folk Music Camp is designed to offer Campers the opportunity to learn from and play with a select group of professional musicians. Campers may perform as solos, duets, trios or quartets.

The range of music will be from the folk songs of the 50’s to current day Americana songs. Expect a wide range of material to be played during the four performance nights. We expect to hear songs from The Chad Mitchell Trio, The Limeliters, Tom Paxton, Gordon Lightfoot, Ian and Sylvia, Bob Dylan, and contemporary musicians such as  John Stewart, Steve Earle, Jimmy LaFave and many others. The only limitation is that they must be acoustic.

The format for performances is simple. We limit the Camp to 32 Campers. The camp runs for five days with performances on four of those nights. Each Camper will perform on three of the four nights. If you choose to be a solo you would perform one song, if you choose to be in a duet you would perform two, your song AND your friend’s song. If you choose to be in a trio you would perform three songs. You may mix up your choices and be a solo one night, in a duet the second and in a trio the third. It’s all up to you. We will supply a list of the Campers so you know who will be attending. Many of you have done this before and the names will be familiar to you.

Our staff will work with you during scheduled rehearsals each day. These rehearsals are to enhance and refine your performances. You will have ample opportunity to do rehearsals on your own during the day, too. The staff will be available to assist you onstage during your performances. We will have 96 songs performed during the four nights so we ask that if you want assistance from the music staff please choose songs that they will either know or be able to learn quickly. If you want to do more obscure material or your own song and need no assistance we will be glad to hear you perform them.

THE SCHEDULE:

Tuesday: Reception with appetizers and a cash bar followed by a short concert by our music staff.

Wednesday-Saturday- Rehearsals scheduled for a five hour block in the morning and early afternoon. Performances each evening with each Camper performing on three of the four nights.

The Bloodliner’s Reunion 2018

We are also pleased to announce that the Bloodliner’s Reunion will  run alongside the Camp. The Bloodliners  are John Stewart’s internet group and meet yearly at the Plaza where they have a wonderful, music-filled Hospitality Suite. We thank them for their support of this new camp.

OUR STAFF

We are very excited and pleased to announce our Music Staff for the 2018 Camp.

George Grove is a master banjo player, guitar player, vocalist and music theorist. He spent the past 41 years with one of the finest touring folk music acts in the US.

Rick Dougherty is one of the finest vocalists in folk music today. His interests vary widely and his ability to harmonize makes him a great addition. He also plays a wide range of guitar styles.

Paul Gabrielson has spent the past 29 years on the road as the bass player for the Kingston Trio. He will be providing bass accompaniment on almost all of the songs.

Rob Reider has won five regional Emmy Awards for musical compositions and on-air performances and has produced all but one of the Kingston Trio CD projects since 2008. He is also the premier air-show announcer in the US and flies his own plane.

John Hoke is a music producer, solo artist and performing musician. He was a close friend of the late John Stewart and produced many of John’s recordings.

Bob Hawkins is a member of the John Stewart Band and one of the finest guitar players you will ever hear. He also played with John Stewart.

Dave Batti was John Stewart’s bass player for 25 years. He also plays many other instruments including trumpet and accordion. I don’t see much call for the trumpet but he usually has the accordion within easy reach!
